Primary production and biovolume of various phototrophic plankton size fractions in three southeastern United States reservoirs.

چکیده
Plankton size classes of <3 mum consisting largely of unicellular cyanobacteria accounted for 15 to 40% of the total primary production and generally represented <5% of the total phototrophic plankton biovolume in three South Carolina reservoirs.

Seasonal Abundance, Biomass and Morphological Diversity of Picoplankton in Lake Superior: Importance of Water Column Mixing
Pico and nano-sized plankton play an important role in regulating the trophic dynamics and key biogeochemical cycles in most pelagic environments, such changes in their abundance and population dynamics can alter ecosystem-level changes [1,2]. Both heterotrophic (Hpico) and phototrophic (Ppico) picoplankton are particularly important in oligotrophic lakes, with deep water column depths and long...
متن کاملBiovolume spectrum theories applied: spatial patterns of trophic levels within a mesozooplankton community at the polar front
Three-dimensional data on the mesoscale distribution of hydrography and mesozooplankton were collected at the Polar Front, northwestern Barents Sea, in spring 2008 (29 April-15 May) using a combination of multinet and towed instrument platform equipped with Laser Optical Plankton Counter, fluorometer and CTD. Trophic levels (TLs) within the zooplankton community (whole community and size-separa...
متن کاملSuitability of flow cytometry for estimating bacterial biovolume in natural plankton samples: comparison with microscopy data.
The relationship between flow cytometry data and epifluorescence microscopy measurements was assessed in bacterioplankton samples from 80 lakes to estimate bacterial biovolume and cell size distribution. The total counts of 4',6'-diamidino-2-phenylindole-stained cells estimated by both methods were significantly related, and the slope of their linear regression was not significantly different f...
متن کاملOn the Reduction of Optimization Time in Simulation of Oil Reservoirs
Thermal recovery techniques including Fast-SAGD process increases the production efciency of heavy oil reservoirs. Effective parameters in this study included injection and production rates, height of the injection, production, and offset wells, production and injection cycles, and pressure of the offset wells. In this study, optimization studies were performed. The objective function was defned a...
متن کاملIntroduced Lake Trout Produced a Four-Level Trophic Cascade in Yellowstone Lake
—Introduction of lake trout Salvelinus namaycush into a system can add a trophic level, potentially affecting organisms at lower trophic levels. Similar to many lakes and reservoirs in the western United States, lake trout were introduced into Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming. Previous studies showed that lake trout reduced the population and altered the size structure of native Yellowstone cutthroat ...
